Kerbcraft - Child Pedestrian Training - Road safety

Project Aim

Kerbcraft is a practical road side training scheme aimed at children between the ages of 5-7 yr olds. It teaches 3 specific road safety skills within the schools vicinity. The scheme is volunteer lead and volunteers are recruited from within school – parents/grandparents or PCSO’s. All volunteers complete DBS application form. Volunteers receive training before scheme commences.

Health and safety is adhered to at all times

What does the project entail

Kerbcraft Officers from City & County of Swansea Road safety Team will coordinated the whole scheme in conjunction with Head/Class teacher.

Once training is completed an assembly is delivered to the school/parents and each participant is presented with an achievement certificate.

Throughout the scheme participants are given a record of achievement /sticker book to log their training.

What is required from the school?

Kerbcraft is a FREE 10 week scheme - morning sessions begins at 9/9.30am and the afternoon 1/1.15pm
Commitment/encouragement from schools in assisting with consent forms as participants will be out of class for 30mins each week.

During inclement weather some sessions can be delivered indoors assistance in allowing access to the school will be essential.

If not enough volunteers are recruited the scheme cannot be delivered unless support is offered by means of an LAS/ Teaching Assistant.

How do the pupils directly benefit?

Pupils will develop a heightened level of road safety knowledge and pedestrian skills to help them make appropriate choices when they become independent road users.
