Play Wales - Right to Play Workshop

Project Aim

Play Wales is the national charity for children's play. We work to raise awareness of children and young people's need and right to play and to promote good practice at every level of decision making and in every place where children might play.

What does the project entail

To raise children’s awareness of their right to play, Play Wales has developed a Right to Play workshop pack. It includes a workshop plan, materials and resources to support the local promotion, participation and advocacy of the Right to Play.

What is required from the school?

The workshop is designed for playworkers, participation workers, youth workers and school staff to facilitate in schools and other structured settings. The resources have been designed for use in schools – the pack contains activities for facilitator led workshops and for use by the school following the workshop.

How do the pupils directly benefit?

The Right to Play workshop is designed to empower children and young people to better advocate for better opportunities for playing and meeting up with their friends. The Right to Play workshop is a fun and engaging 90 minute workshop available to be delivered to children in Key stage 2 and 3.

It is designed to raise their awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and especially Article 31, which focuses on their Right to Play and Article 12, which focuses on their right to be consulted on matters which affect them.

The workshop plan introduction includes specific information as to how the workshop links to the Wales curriculum and Estyn’s self evaluation manual. There are also suggestions for ways that play could be incorporated into areas of the curriculum.
