Vulnerable families and individuals living in Swansea will have improved health and wellbeing.
A six session programme that runs weekly, focussing on cooking, nutrition and physical activity. Programmes are tailored to the groups' needs and we strongly encourage parent/carer involvement to ensure families can make real improvements to their health and wellbeing.
Nutrition information and cooking sessions are based around the Eatwell Guide model and there is a strong focus on eating '5-a-day' and having a balanced diet together with how to meet physical activity recommendations and plan family meals.
Programmes can be delivered to whole classes (usually split into groups) or to smaller 'targeted' groups of pupils identified by the school.
For cooking sessions, all equipment and ingredients are provided and will be suitable for the group/venue. Our nutrition information is delivered largely through practical and visual resources that are accessible to pupils of all ages. The programmes may also utilise resources from organisations such as the British Nutrition Foundation and Change4Life.
A demonstration event may also be provided to give pupils and parents an idea of what the project entails.
Schools are also encouraged to send staff on our Training and Support programme, to allow them to deliver programmes in the future. Schools doing this will be supported with use of resouces and equipment as much as possible.
An initial visit will allow us to gather as much information as possible to ensure a programme can be developed to meet the needs of the group/class as much as possible. A suitable room for the activity to take place and a commitment to complete the six week programme are the key requirements.
Engaging parents in the programme is also an important element of the project. A member of school staff would be expected to be responsible for the group/class and supervising pupils during the session if parents/carers were not in attendance.
Pupils will benefit from improving knowledge of health and wellbeing. By engaging parents and carers in programmes, families will have the practical skills and knowledge to be able to improve their health with better diets and increased activity levels.
If schools commit to training staff to deliver the programme these benefits can continue in the future.
